History
British engineers built the first red-brick lighthouse here in 1883, two decades after Takao opened to foreign trade. The Japanese administration rebuilt it beside the old site between 1916 and 1918, and its outward look has hardly changed since. A renovation completed in 2022 added light meals and evening opening.
