Thai iced coffee
泰式咖啡
Also called: oliang · o-liang · 泰式冰咖啡
Strong black coffee brewed with roasted grains, served over ice and often sweetened with condensed milk.
Where it comes from
The name oliang comes from the Teochew reading of 烏涼, 'black and iced'. Teochew people make up most of Thailand's Chinese community.
How it is made
It is traditionally brewed through a cloth coffee sock and left to steep until strong, then poured over ice. Condensed milk, evaporated milk or syrup is added to taste.
How to eat it
Tangy Thai food suits it: pad thai, say, or green papaya salad.
In Kaohsiung
Thai Yuan in Lingya is a small spot once called Pad Thai. Michelin's inspectors say its Thai coffee is worth trying alongside the fried noodles.
